Monica Geyer just recently moved to Columbia, SC from Lake Lure, NC. "While living in Lake Lure, I was one of the members of the Board of Directors for the Olympiad" said Geyer. " When I moved, I had to resign my position but still wanted to support such a great cause. Therefore, I decided to attempt the triathlon, my first attempt at this sport. I could not imagine a more beautiful and friendly place to participate in a sporting event while supporting great community causes."
Laura Polhamus is a 50-year-old Greenvillian (but native of Ohio) and has been an avid runner over the last 12 years. " I've done a few marathons, several 1/2 marathons, bunches of 5ks, 8ks, and 10ks.," said Polhamus. " I have never done the Cooper River Bridge run because of the crowds. I was looking for another sprint triathalon close to Greenville, SC, and was thrilled to find the Hickory Nut Gorge Tri. We love the Lake Lure area--our fist experience in Lake Lure was almost 30 years ago when my husband and I hiked Chimney Rock when we were dating. And then my aunt owned a condo time share at Fairfield Inn in Lake Lure for several years, and we stayed there twice. We even stayed at the historic Inn for one of our early anniversaries. We've brought our kids to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure over the years, and we love to shop in its' quaint town. My husband and I are excited to spend the day in Lake Lure after the triathlon. It sounds like a wonderful Olympiad weekend for Lake Lure, and I am really looking forward to it!"
Michael Purcell, 39 of Mount Pleasant, S.C. has compete in past Olympiads and plans on competing in this year's competition with 5 of his other friends and one of their wives. "This is a great event for the kids. A really great outdoor event. They do a really good job with it," says Purcell. He and his wife and 2 kids, ages 5 and 7 also have a home on Bald Mountain Lake and love the area and the togetherness that it has brought their family. "It revitalizes our family being able to spend time together and enjoy this beautiful place," he says. "I've ran the Cooper River Bridge Runs. That doesn't compare to the rush you get with the Hickory Nut Gorge Olympiad. It's a whole different experience."
Participation for this year’s triathlon is expected to reach the max of 300, so athletes are encouraged to register as soon as possible. For more information on volunteering, registering for events or contributing, please visit www.HickoryNutOlympiad.com or call 828-429-9011.
