Palmetto Bluff Info
Palmetto Bluff is a vibrant human settlement surrounded by wilderness teeming with wildlife, unspoiled rivers and salt marshes, and the sounds and smells of nature unpolluted by civilization.
As the largest remaining waterfront property on the East Coast, Palmetto Bluff is evolving as a residential community and conservation preserve. Of the original 20,000 acre tract, 6,500 acres were set aside as a managed forest, and since that time, an additional 734 acres have been put under a conservation easement.
The community of Palmetto Bluff is characterized by extensive nature preserves, river access and walking trails, a vibrant Village center and an elegant inn and spa managed by Auberge Resorts.
The residential real estate offerings at Palmetto Bluff are as diverse as the land itself and are categorized as ‘Town’ or ‘Country’ in character. The former will consist of a series of residential Villages where neighbors live closely, by choice, and walk or bike to nearby facilities. The creation of Wilson Village was the culmination of extensive studies of the characteristics and synergy of Southern waterfront towns such as Beaufort, Charleston and Savannah.
‘Country’ properties consist of larger homesites (some up to 30 acres), which lie outside the Village areas and emphasize privacy, natural surroundings and—to the extent desired— seclusion. Yet all are within a five to eight minute drive to recreation, shopping, dining and other facilities.
The variety of real estate property types provides a diversity rarely found in residential communities. Whether you prefer ‘Town’ or ‘Country,’ both provide access to some of the finest recreational facilities and the opportunity to explore the brilliant natural setting that gives Palmetto Bluff its distinctive spirit.
Palmetto Bluff is owned by Crescent Resources, a land management and real estate development company headquartered in Charlotte, NC.

Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course:
Jack Nicklaus has carefully woven a Signature Golf Course into the fabric of Palmetto Bluff. Winding past shady live oaks and palmettos along the high bluffs of the May River, golfers enjoy the game in peace and serenity, interrupted only by the sights and sounds of nature.
A par 72 layout, the May River Golf Club course stretches 7,100 yards and is the result of multiple designs to find the ultimate routing. The course also features a new paspalum grass on tees and fairways that is heat and salt tolerant, requiring less water. Even the sand in the bunkers is special—Nicklaus introduced sand from Ohio with an angular grain that promotes adhesion and reduces maintenance after coastal storms. -
Tennis & Lawn Sports:
The expansive Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club facility includes eight Har-Tru tennis courts, two regulation croquet lawns, two bocce courts, four courtside shelters and a Pro Shop with a pavilion and locker room.
Wilson Lawn & Racquet Club blends gracefully into its natural surroundings, which include a healthy population of pine and live oak that provide shade and ambiance.
The tennis courts are situated around the bocce and croquet areas. Two of the courts are outfitted with lights, and two courts are exhibition size with room for bleacher seating for special events. The Har-Tru surfaces are irrigated with a subsurface watering system that allows optimum moisture to be maintained above ground, and the bocce courts also feature a clay surface. The Pro Shop, finished with cedar-shake shingle roofing and siding, includes a breezeway and porches. Tennis clinics, instruction, round robin tournaments and group events are available. -
Boating & Fishing:
With miles of smooth uninterrupted waterways, the scenic rivers and creeks that surround Palmetto Bluff are a paddlers’ paradise. In addition, miles of interior freshwater trails will connect the Village to other neighborhoods as well as the Bluff’s eastern shore. From Wilson Landing, which offers dry storage for canoes, kayaks and power boats up to 36 feet, paddlers can also access the salt marshes of the May River. The May River gives power boaters access to the Intracoastal Waterway allowing safe and enjoyable excursions to nearby Hilton Head Island and the historic cities of Beaufort, SC, and Savannah, GA.
Available for charter cruises are a 36-foot jet powered Hinckley Picnic Boat (six passengers) and Grace, a meticulously restored 25 passenger 1913 wooden motor yacht. Club boats are on hand for member use making a fully stocked and provisioned boat only a phone call away.
In recent years, the Carolina Lowcountry has staked its reputation as one of America’s prime sport fisheries. Saltwater fly-fishing on the area’s expansive salt marsh flats, in particular, has gained national recognition. In addition, freshwater fishing in Palmetto Bluff’s numerous ponds is superb year-round. Few places in America offer the variety and consistent quality of fishing found at Palmetto Bluff. -
Trails & Nature:
All residential neighborhoods, the Inn, the Golf Club and the Canoe Club are linked through a series of historic roads, paths and an innovative network of freshwater trails.
This intricate trail system will allow residents to reach their destinations by bicycle, foot, boat, horseback, golf cart or automobile. Certainly the most distinctive of these trails are the waterways, which will provide access to all parts of the island.
River Road Preserve
The 120-acre River Road Preserve is a natural haven for wildlife and sits on the eastern edge of Palmetto Bluff and fronts both the May River and the Cooper River. An extensive trail system and park-like infrastructure includes observation posts, interpretive signage, comfort stations, docks along the water trail and many other innovative trail features, including a canopy walk through the trees.
The Preserve adds a significant new dimension to the Palmetto Bluff outdoor experience. The Conservation Easement, which is being managed by the non-profit North American Land Trust, will shield the tract from development in perpetuity.
Nature Programs
A primary goal of the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy is to educate residents through programs and activities. An expansive calendar of activities has been developed offering programs six days a week that will familiarize you with the natural history of Palmetto Bluff and the Lowcountry.
The Conservancy sponsors workshops, programs and lecture series to help our members learn more about their new home at Palmetto Bluff. Their Habitat Review Workshops are intended to connect members with their land and the rest of Palmetto Bluff through interactive morning discussions and afternoon field trips to various sites across the property. -
Equestrian:
Longfield Stables, Palmetto Bluff’s equestrian facility, offers diversified programs and activities of all equestrian disciplines for property owners and guests within a rural Lowcountry landscape. Their goal is to provide 24-hour equestrian care in a professionally maintained and staffed setting. A total area of approximately 173 acres has been dedicated to the main equestrian area, hayfields pastures and cross-country practice area and an extensive trail system, totaling approximately 15 miles accommodates riders and drivers. The facility includes a covered arena with a riding surface dimension of 130’x 250’, an outdoor FEI Regulation size Dressage Ring, a Cross-Country practice course designed by Olympian John Williams, a 5-acre turf event field available for schooling horses and special events, a 24-stall main barn and a 14-stall receiving barn, both featuring oversized 12’9" x 14’ stalls with Rubber Mat Systems installed for comfort and safety.

Wilson Village:
At the heart of this place, a village has been established. The village is anchored by diverse housing styles and sizes, cultural opportunities with far-ranging appeal and commercial facilities serving residents and visitors alike. It pulses with activity, yet never loses sight of the rare and fragile natural resources that are its reason for being.
In Wilson Village, full-time and part-time residents live close together by choice—walking or biking to virtually everything—and it is this “body heat” which fuels the energy of the area as a whole.
The centerpiece of the Village is The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, managed by Auberge Resorts, one of the world’s foremost operators of luxury hotels.
The Village serves as the “heartbeat” of Palmetto Bluff, and the vital element which makes it both different and real. -
Wilson Landing:
Located just north of the Wilson Village Center, Wilson Landing is comprised of a dry storage boat facility with 80 racks accommodating boats up to 36 feet in length, a dock with six platform lifts over the water, an outfitters center and the Boat Club rental program.
For boat owners who want a safe haven for their vessel and quick access to the pristine Lowcountry waterways, Wilson Landing is the ideal site. Located on the May River, with Skull Creek, the Cooper River, Calibogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean all close at hand, Palmetto Bluff is an outstanding central location from which to base your boating activities.
The outfitters center, "Outside Palmetto Bluff," at Wilson Landing is the “outdoor concierge” for property owners, guests and area residents who want to explore the local waterways. The center offers daily guided adventures including kayak tours, Daufuskie Island excursions, freshwater and saltwater fishing excursions, stand up paddling and custom designed outings; as well as a wide-selection of sandals, casual outdoor wear and sunglasses. -
Chapel:
The Chapel at Palmetto Bluff is a culmination of design elements and materials which were essential in the creation/recreation of an iconic symbol seen in small towns and communities for centuries across the South. The primary influence of the simple, wood-clad structure was a small church on Edisto Island, which had a deep porch across the front, providing refuge from the elements. The materials had to speak of those typically used a century ago like the wide board pine floors made from 1,250 square feet of Long Leaf Heart Pine reclaimed from the Piedmont Mill in Piedmont, SC. The Chapel Pews were handcrafted from 3,000 pounds of refurbished Antique Heart Pine, which was recovered from a New York City building destroyed September 11, 2001. The high gothic windows were important not only to the look, but particularly to the function of the space, as they rise from the floor six feet to allow easy passage from indoors to the lawn outside. Bricks used for the Chapel came from the Old Carolina Brick Company and were hand molded on the colonial tradition of craftsmanship and lasting beauty. The steeple bell was wrung for the first time on September 1, 2004. Genesis Construction commissioned the Chapel Bell to be handcrafted by the Verdin bell company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Verdin is a fourth generation Bellforge established in 1842.
